There’s no better way to learn than taking a look at those who do it best. Whether you want a single or double breasted coat, the key to finding a piece that will look great this fall is understanding the basics.
1. Think about the length. You want a coat that falls above the knee, but one that is certainly longer than your suit jacket. This lower thigh area is the sweet spot as it allows the coat to be worn professionally as well as on the weekends.
2. Good fit is a must. We’ve all seen guys wearing jackets with too much room and they can be very unflattering. You want something slim that will lengthen out your frame, but you also don’t want it so slim that you can’t layer underneath.
3. Consider color. These guys show that a brown, navy, or grey coat can look equally good depending on the outfit. The gentleman in the bottom image keeps consistant with his three-piece suit by opting for a grey topcoat, while our very own Nish de Gruiter chose to pair a navy coat with his grey suit. A brown coat can look great, as well, especially when paired with warmer hues like the red shirt Mr. Marzotto wears in the top left.
